iMac, iPod, iphone...there are many 'i's in digital world. All are popular and successful. But I think few know the first one that used the term 'i' in front of some computer product is 'i mode'.
By the way where's ATARI right now? The company was famous when I was a graduate student in mid 80's.
Mercedo! It's been such a long time since I've seen you around. How have things been?
ReplyDeleteAtari, is still around, but they are exclusively a software distribution company now. They do not design or sell hardware, and they don't actually create software. They do own the rights to several software titles and related characters, some of them from the days when you were a graduate student. Their stock still trades, but they were dropped from the primary NASDAQ trading list. (now are on Pink Sheet system, for low volume trades).
Their stock appears to be barely holding to $1.64 per share these days. up from an all-time-low of $1.42 in January. For comparison, back in 1996, the stock was traded for over $1000 per share.
That said, if you walk through the software section of the store, you can still see Atari logos on the back of some boxes, like "Neverwinter Nights" (I think this is their most popular title now).
Thanks Allen, I'm Ok and I have been writing comments as the same as before. It was neither in Multiply nor in Slashdot though.
ReplyDeleteI had nothing to do with Atari but the word is apparently from Japanese, meaning ' Bingo!'. So I remember I felt familiar with the company.
I just wonder how fierce the prosperity and downfall in companies of the computer world are.
